21-year-old debutant Mayank Yadav displayed his talent in an impressive debut for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings (PKBS) at Ekuna Stadium. Sharma’s outstanding spell, comprising three wickets for 27 runs in four overs, played a crucial role in LSG’s 21-run victory.
What truly set Yadav apart was his lightning-fast pace, reaching an astounding 155.8 kmph, which became the fastest delivery of the IPL 2024 season.
His fast pace harmed PKBS, particularly their captain Shikhar Dhawan, who was batting at 59 when faced with Sharma’s powerful deliveries. Despite PKBS progressing comfortably at 101/0 after 11 overs, Sharma’s destructive bowling changed the momentum in LSG’s favor.
Reflecting on his encounter with Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan acknowledged the young bowler’s prowess, stating, “He bowled really well. It was nice facing him, surprised me with that pace. Knew as an experienced player I’d use it. But he figured it out and bowled yorkers to keep me down to a dot and a single.” Dhawan’s analysis highlighted Sharma’s adaptability and strategic awareness under pressure.
LSG’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, commended Sharma’s performance, emphasizing his ability to maintain high speeds despite challenging conditions.
Morkel stated, “Young Mayank bowled serious heat and got the wickets. He ran in and that was the pleasing thing. We asked the guys to do the basics well on a good wicket. Told him to stick to his lengths and use bouncers.
Mayank Yadav’s journey to IPL stardom began when he was picked by LSG in the 2022 mega-auction for a modest sum of Rs 20 lakh. Although he missed the 2023 season due to injury, Yadav’s impressive performances in the 2023 Deodhar Trophy, representing the North Zone team, earned him recognition as one of the standout players.
Finishing as the joint-second highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets in five innings, Yadav’s talent and potential were undeniable, paving the way for his triumphant return to the IPL stage in 2024.
