Ahead of IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have added Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera to their squad as a backup for Mitchell Starc.
KKR shared the news on their social media with a lot of excitement, saying, “Thrilled to welcome Dushmantha Chameera to the KKR family! Let’s roar louder this season with our newest addition! #KKR #IPL2024 #Chameera #WelcomeToKKR.”
This move makes sense considering how tough the IPL is and the need for strong backup players in case of injuries. Chameera has caught KKR’s eye with his ability to bowl fast and get bounce, making him a good fit for filling in for Starc if needed.
Having Chameera gives KKR more options in their bowling attack and adds depth to their team. Fans can expect some exciting cricket with both Starc and Chameera on the team. As the IPL approaches, KKR will rely on Chameera to step up when required and help the team perform well.
The fast bowler from Sri Lanka, known for his speed and tricky deliveries, played for Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 and 2021 IPL seasons. He was with Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) in 2022, taking nine wickets in 12 matches.
Although KKR signed him, he’s currently injured. He got hurt during Sri Lanka’s first ODI against Afghanistan and had to leave after bowling his 8th over. He couldn’t play in the next two matches because of the injury.
If he can overcome these challenges and showcase his skills consistently, Chameera has the potential to emerge as a key contributor to KKR’s campaign in IPL 2024, providing valuable support to Mitchell Starc and bolstering the team’s bowling department.
Additionally, Chameera’s presence in the KKR squad not only adds depth to their bowling attack but also provides flexibility in their team composition.
His ability to bowl quick and extract bounce makes him a potent weapon on various pitches, giving KKR the option to tailor their bowling lineup according to the conditions.
Moreover, Chameera’s experience in handling pressure situations in high-stakes matches, such as international fixtures and previous IPL seasons, suggests well for his role as Starc’s backup.
Earlier in the IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made headlines by signing Gus Atkinson for a significant amount of money. Atkinson, a talented all-rounder, was seen as a valuable addition to KKR’s team, providing them with more options for both batting and bowling.
However, despite the initial excitement, Atkinson surprised everyone by deciding to leave the IPL. He said he needed to focus on his mental health and well-being, which had been affected by the pressures of professional cricket.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) respected his decision and offered their support. KKR signed Gus Atkinson for the base price of 1 crore for the IPL 2024, but he decided to leave. Consequently, they acquired Dushmantha Chameera for the base price of 50 lakhs, ensuring they maintained a balanced squad despite the unexpected departure of Atkinson.
